This was the name that explorer John Wesley Powell used when he visited the canyon in the 1870s. However, in the early 1850s, Mormon pioneers began to settle into the area and named the canyon Zion, a biblical term meaning "a place of refuge." Unfortunately for the settlers and homesteaders, in and around the future national park, survival was a struggle. Detrimental floods, little arable land, and poor soil made agriculture almost impossible and many settlements abandoned the area. Zion was ultimately made desirable to the public by Frederick Dellenbaugh, an artist and adventurer, who painted Zion Canyon and other beautiful sceneries from Utah. Government officials saw the increase in interest and created Mukuntuweap National Monument in 1909. The naming strongly insulted the local residents and Mormon settlers of the area as they saw Zion canyon as a part of the Mormon heritage. Horace Albright, the director of the newly created National Park Service, took it into his hands to rename the location to Zion National Monument and it calmed the outrage. A rise in tourism due to newly placed railway stations caused Congress to enlarge and create Zion National Park in 1919. In 1929, the same year Simpson & Vail was incorporated, the park's official nonprofit, Zion National History Association, now Zion National Park Forever Project, was developed in order to support education, research, and to help support the park for future generations.

While there are a variety of plants and herbs growing in Zion, there are not a lot of edible ones which made creating this blend challenging. The base "tea" for this blend was easy as I chose the herb Rooibos (red) to represent the red rock found everywhere in Zion. The pine trees at the park, which almost look out of place squeezing through the rocks to grow, inspired the addition of sage, an herb with a similar taste profile to pine, to the blend. Lavender flowers, an herb that thrives in sunny, hot desert (arid), rocky landscapes, were added for their woody, earthy and floral taste. To complete the blend, I added an elderberry flavor that brought the perfect amount of tart, sweet fruit taste to round out the herbal flavors. This simple yet savory blend brews to a deep red colored cup that has a tantalizing aroma and a creamy fruit and floral taste.

Ingredients: Rooibos, natural and artificial elderberry flavor, sage, lavender, and horsetail.

Brew tea at 212º - steep for 5 minutes.

4 Ounces of loose tea makes approximately 50 cups of tea.

Please note that the photo is shown for our 4oz tin. George B Dorr devoted his life to the preservation of Acadia; he depleted most of his savings to buy multiple properties on Mt. Desert Island in order to donate it. John D. Rockefeller Jr. & other wealthy conservationists also played a huge role in creating what we know today as Acadia by donating their land to the park. Rockefeller also funded construction of roughly forty-five miles of carriage roads that run throughout the park. The roads use native materials and are landscaped around the vegetation in the park including blueberry bushes and sweet ferns. In 1916, President Wilson first declared the land Sieur de Monts National Monument, Dorr continued to acquire land and push for national park status. In 1919, Acadia was renamed, and Lafayette National Park Act was signed making it the first national park east of the Mississippi River. In 1929, the same year Simpson & Vail was incorporated, Lafayette National Park received an official name change to Acadia National Park. The Smoky Mountains is the most visited park in the US with numbers such as 11.4 million visits in 2018. There is a multitude of reasons for these large numbers. On my last visit to the Smokies I met a woman and her family on vacation. She told me she vacationed in the Smokies every year since the 1970s and hikes a different trail every year! The variety of hiking trails is only one of the reasons people keep coming back. Delicious blackberries grow abundantly here and it's almost impossible to leave the Smokies without blackberry flavored goodies: Blackberry jam, blackberry donuts, and (the best) blackberry moonshine. Naturally when designing a blend for this park we started with a prominent blackberry flavor then added a subtle smoky taste which represents the haze that lays across the mountains.

History:
This National Park is unique because, unlike out west where the government owned the land, the proposed land for the Smokies was already occupied by European settlers (farmers, loggers, and other businesses). After a trip to several national parks in the west, Anne Davis decided that the Great Smoky Mountains would be a perfect home for a national park. She set out to take part in establishing this park in order to halt the progress of loggers, who were beginning to diminish resources and wildlife from the area. She was elected to the state legislature with this goal in mind and became instrumental in proposing the legislation that provided funds for the purchase of the Little River Lumber Company land that became the kernel for what would grow into the national park. Her efforts were one of many that dated back to the late 1890's in the struggle to establish a western style national park in the east.

In 1929, the same year that Simpson & Vail was incorporated, the National Park Service set out to purchase private land within the proposed park boundaries. While many people sold their holdings others, like the Walker family, were more resistant. John and Margaret Jane Walker lived in a small 3 room, two story cabin with their eleven children. After John Walker died, he left the home to his six unmarried daughters. The sisters refused to leave their home and it wasn't until 1940, that they agreed to sell their family residence with the stipulation of being allowed to live out their lives on the property. As visitors began to flood the Smokies, the Walker sisters still lived their humble, mountain lifestyle. They were welcoming to tourists for a little over 30 years after the park's founding until, in 1966, the last sister passed away. In 1872, President Grant signed a protection act in order to begin the preservation process, making Yellowstone the first official US national park. The National Park Service was not yet created, so the US Army took over responsibility of Yellowstone in order to strengthen and enforce regulations. Unfortunately, the Army was unable to effectively prevent poaching, especially of the nation's now oldest and largest public bison herd, and they also lacked the knowledge of the area that visitors craved. With the help of some influential conservationists, such as Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, Woodrow Wilson, and many others, the National Park Service was created in 1916 with the top priority being preservation and appreciation for nature. In 1929, the same year Simpson & Vail was incorporated, Yellowstone received a boundary adjustment made to include a significant area of petrified trees (fossilized vegetation). The Blackfoot Indians inhabited the land in and around what is now Glacier National Park for approximately 10,000 years. They continued to dominate the land until the late 1870s when explorers and homesteaders made their way across the US during Westward Expansion. To this day the Blackfoot Tribe considers Glacier the "most spiritual place for the Blackfoot" and refers to it as "the backbone of the world." The Blackfoot were not the only people who wanted to protect the area, George Bird Grinnell, a naturalist from the east, became fond of the land and the Indian Tribes who inhabited it. Throughout his travels, Grinnell advocated strongly for the humane treatment of the local Indian Tribes and campaigned for game laws to protect birds and other animals in the area. Grinnell originated the idea of a glacier national park from a map he drew of the area in the late 1800s and was responsible for promoting the legislation that made it possible. President Harrison named the land a Forest Preserve, but this still allowed mining and lumbering with a permit. When Theodore Roosevelt visited the Grand Canyon in the early 1900s, he expressed his wish to keep it pristine for future generations. Under the Antiquities Act, President Roosevelt declared the land a National Monument in 1908. It was not until 1919; that the Grand Canyon was officially named the 17th national park. In 1929, the same year Simpson & Vail was incorporated, Polly Mead Patraw became the first female Park ranger in Grand Canyon and the second female ranger-naturalist in the whole US Park Service (the first being Claire Hodges at Yosemite).

The cup features a scalloped rim with a larger rendition of the rose pattern on one side and a smaller version on the other side. Gold embellishments highlight both the cup and saucer and make this a treasure to add to your collection!

Made in China.

Royal Blue brushed - cotton 6 panel baseball cap with embroidered SV logo in gold with an ivory tea leaf.

100 % cotton, made in Vietnam & printed in the USA.

Brew your favorite S&V tea with this endearing elephant tea ball!

The stainless steel 2-cup mesh tea ball, with a clamp closure and weighted elephant charm at the end of the chain, will prevent the tea ball from slipping into your cup or mug, and ensure easy retrieval once your tea has reached the desired strength.

Made in China

An atmospheric fantasy woodland scene, depicted in the traditional Arts & Crafts style.
